Black Lentils Curry

Vegan | Gluten-Free

Yield : 3-4 servings


  • 2 cups Cooked Black lentils ( or can lentils )

  • 1 Onion finely chopped

  • 3 large Tomatoes Puree

  • 4 - 5 Garlic Cloves chopped

  • 1 Cinnamon Stick, 1 Bay Leaf, 3-4 Cloves, 1 tbsp Cumin seeds

  • 2 tbsp Coconut Oil (or) any Cooking Oil

  • 2 tsp red chilli powder, 2 tsp coriander powder, 1 tsp cumin powder, 1/2 tsp salt. ( add all spices as per your taste )

  • 2 cups Water


  • In a cooking pot, add oil, cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon stick and cook for a minute. Add chopped garlic, chopped onions and saute for 3-4 minutes or till onions turn golden brown in color.

  • Add tomato puree , mix well and cook for 4 mins or till mixture thickens. Add salt, chiili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and mix till well combined.

  • Add lentils, water and cook for 30 mins with lid covered. 

  • Serve with rice or flat bread!


  • If want to cook lentils from scratch, soak 1 cup of lentils in water overnight and pressure cook for 5 mins or cook with 2 cups of water for 20 - 30 mins till lentils are well  cooked.

  • In traditional Indian restaurants, lentils curry is cooked on simmer for 6-8 hrs....if you are looking for similar taste,  cook the same recipe in slow cooker for 6 hrs.
