Yield : 6-8 slices

1 1/4 cup All-purpose Flour

3/4 cup Sugar

1 1/4 tsp Baking Soda

1/2 tsp Salt

2 tbsp Orange Zest

1 tsp Vanilla Essence

1/2 tsp Orange Essence ( optional )

3/4 cup Plant Milk 

1/4 cup Coconut Oil

1/2 tsp Vinegar


  • Prepare 8-inch cake pan with parchment paper and sugar dusting.

  • In a large mixing bowl, add flour, sugar, baking soda and whisk till well mixed. 

  • In a separate bowl add all wet ingredients, milk, oil, vinegar, vanilla essence, orange zest and mix well.

  • Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix just well combined, do not over mix.

  • Transfer the batter to prepared cake pan and bake at 350 F for 25 mins.

  • When cake is completely cool, add 2 tbsp of sugar syrup on top ( to avoid dry cake ).

  • Add candied orange slices on top or glaze fresh orange slices with sugar syrup. Serve with Tea!


  • Add 1 tsp of orange zest in sugar syrup to add more orange flavor.

  • Add orange slices at the bottom of the cake pan before adding batter for upside down orange cake. Can find similar upside down peach cake recipe here.
